People often ask me about my job as a nanny. Do I really like it? Is it a job I plan to do for the rest of my life? Do I work for a good family? Does it make me want kids of my own?
Being a childcare provider has its challenges. From common-place dirty diapers all the way to temper-tantrums that make us feel like crazy people, sometimes it is a very hard job. Sometimes it feels like all of our efforts go unnoticed and are ineffective. But at the end of the day, being a childcare provider is one of the coolest, most rewarding jobs around.
3 Reasons Being a Childcare Provider is Awesome
We Receive A Lot of Love
As a nanny, I receive daily hugs, kisses, loving tackles, etc. Now, the guidelines may be a little different for day cares- I’m not really sure if you are allowed to get cute little hugs and kisses in that setting. But regardless, kids usually show their love without holding back, so when they love you, you sure do know it. Their smiles and laughs will prove it every day.
The love we receive is such a blessing. Unfortunately, some people will never experience that kind of love in their life, and we need to realize what a privilege we have with our jobs!
We Get to Act Like a Kid
There are very few jobs in the world that allow us to eat candy, play with bubbles, and run around at the playground. It doesn’t really matter if we get sweaty or dirty, and laughing loudly is encouraged. We eat pizza rolls and popcorn, watch Frozen, and read books. We sing, dance, and take the dog to the park. Try doing those things in a corporate office without getting glared at by someone! HA!
Sure, we have to be a grown-up when push comes to shove, but we don’t have to be proper, uptight, or dressed to perfection. We get to be casual, which is quite freeing in a lot of ways.
We Get to Help Mold Another Life
As childcare providers, we are responsible for the lives of the children we care for. We are their main influence throughout the week, and we can either teach them great things or terrible habits.
We can choose to be encouragers. We can choose to teach them manners, tidiness, and love by being an example of those things. However, if we model impatience, frustration, and rudeness to them, they will start to mimic those habits.
It can be a scary thing, to realize that we are shaping and molding another life, but what a privilege it is at the same time! To have the opportunity to be a positive light in the life of a child is quite certainly the best part of the job!
At the end of the day, being a childcare provider is awesome. It may have its drawbacks and some ups and downs, but that is true for every job in the world. So when we are feeling frustrated about our jobs, having a difficult time with a parent, or struggling with how to handle a certain disciplinary issue, let’s remember the benefits we reap as childcare providers and the blessing our jobs really are!
